Memories Over Madness: A Travel Advisor’s Guide to Finding Your Peace
Morning sunrise on Grapevine Lake, TX
Between the wild headlines and the price of eggs, it feels like the world is currently auditioning for a disaster movie. I get it—it’s tempting to just burrow under the covers and wait for the 'uncertainty' to evaporate. But here’s a little secret from your favorite travel pro: Joy shouldn’t be on the waitlist.
While gas prices play hopscotch and the news remains 'a lot,' I truly believe the best antidote to a chaotic world is a change of scenery. You don’t need to wait for world peace to find a little personal peace! Whether your budget is 'fancy-pants' or 'piggy-bank,' or where your risk level is, I’ve curated a list of escapes that skip the geopolitical drama and go straight to the good stuff. Let’s stop holding our breath and start packing our bags (even if it’s just for a weekend).
This post is part one of two, covering various domestic options.
Here’s how we’re reclaiming your summer!
The OG Staycation
Did you know the word “staycation” was actually coined back in 1944? During WWII, folks were dealing with gas rations and a world turned upside down. Sound familiar? We’re basically reviving a classic!
The secret sauce to a staycation is treating it like a real getaway, even if you’re sleeping in your own zip code. If the budget says "yes," book a night at that boutique hotel downtown. If the budget says "maybe next time," that is totally fine!
The Golden Rule? You have to actually act like a tourist. With your family or friends, plan your staycation just like you would a trip far, far away. And then lean into it fully.
Linger over that oat milk latte at the cute cafe you usually rush past.
Tackle that hiking trail you’ve pinned a dozen times.
Sip your way through a local winery or get cultured at the museum.
Whether you’re checking into a suite or just ignoring the laundry at home, the goal is a total "brain-break." Find the things that spark actual joy and give yourself permission to just be.
Pro tips:
Delete the Apps: If you’re staycationing at home, delete your work email and news apps for the weekend. If you wouldn’t do it in Paris, don’t do it in your living room!
The "No Chores" Pact: Make a pact with your family: No vacuuming, no "quick" DIY projects, and absolutely no grocery shopping for boring stuff like toilet paper.
The “Easy Peasy” Resort Escape
If the thought of a flight delay makes you twitchy, let me introduce you to my favorite hack: The Drive-To Resort. Living in the DC area, I’m spoiled for choice—we’ve got world-class mountain retreats and coastal escapes all within a three-hour ride of the city. But honestly? These gems are everywhere. The beauty of a resort is that it’s a "one-and-done" deal. You park the car, toss the keys, and let the relaxation come to you.
Find Your Personality Match:
The "Zen-Seeker": If your nervous system needs a hug, look for wellness-heavy spots like the Miraval properties (Tucson, Austin, or the Berkshires). Think fluffy robes, morning walks and zero "to-do" lists.
The "Water-Baby": If you need the sound of waves to function, aim for the Ocean House in Rhode Island or The Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michaels, MD. Sailing, seafood, and scenery? Yes, please.
The "Pour-Me-a-Glass": Love a vintage? Head to Meritage Resort & Spa or the Four Seasons in Napa Valley. It’s basically a playground for adults who like grapes, vineyard walks and cave tastings.
Pro Tip: The point here is zero friction. No passports, no 4:00 AM airport runs, and no complicated itineraries. It’s just you, a gorgeous setting, and a spa menu.
Horseshoe Ben, Grand Canyon
All Outdoors, All The Time
If you really want to tune out the noise of the world, there is no better place to do it than within our National Park system. We have 63 congressionally protected parks in this country, and they offer a scale of beauty that puts everything else into perspective.
While the "big names" like Yellowstone, Zion, and Shenandoah are iconic for a reason, don’t overlook the lesser-known gems. Often, the parks with a bit less "fame" offer the most peace and quiet—which is exactly what we’re looking for right now.
Here is some expert trip planning Ideas:
The Utah "Mighty Five": I have helped many families coordinate road trips through Utah to see the Grand Canyon, Bryce, and Zion National Parks. Combining these into one itinerary is a bucket-list experience that is surprisingly easy to navigate with the right plan.
The California Coast: With nine parks to its name (the most in the country!), California is a nature-lover's playground.
The Wild Frontier: Alaska holds eight parks, and while some are wonderfully remote, they offer a level of raw beauty you truly can't find anywhere else.
Pro Tip: National Park travel does require a bit of forethought—especially regarding permits and lodging—but that is where the "anticipation" factor comes in! Planning these details now gives you a clear path to some of the most beautiful views on Earth. It’s a wonderful way to reconnect with your family and the great outdoors. And I can help!
Forsythe Park, Savannah, GA
Small City Charm
While giants like New York and LA get all the movies, our medium and small cities are where you’ll find the real heart and soul of the country. These spots allow you to get "up close and personal" with local culture, incredible food, and a slower pace that feels like an actual vacation.
Savannah, Georgia
If you’ve ever read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, you already know Savannah has a personality all its own. It’s a city made for wandering. You can stroll through the 22 historic squares, shop your way down River Street, or get lost in a local bookstore.
Beth’s Favorite: Don’t skip a walking tour of Bonaventure Cemetery. It sounds spooky, but it’s actually a beautiful way to meet the "characters" of the city’s history.
Art & Soul: Visit the SCAD Museum of Art to see what the next generation of world-class designers is creating.
Side Trip: Take a quick drive to Tybee Island for some salt air, or head to Wormsloe State Historic Site. Yes, the interpreters are a bit touristy, but that 1.5-mile drive under the live oaks and Spanish moss is a literal show-stopper.
Palm Springs, California
Palm Springs is wonderfully quirky—a mix of midcentury modern architecture, desert sun, and the occasional celebrity sighting.
Relax & Explore: The tribal spa in the center of town is a must-visit for some serious decompression.
Get Outside: For a little adventure, take a Jeep tour through the desert or hike the slot canyons.
Local History: Take a moment to learn about the Native American history of the area; it’s a fascinating and vital part of the Palm Springs story.
Austin, Texas
They say "Keep Austin Weird," but I say "Keep Austin Delicious." This is the capital of BBQ, boots, and better-than-anywhere-else live music.
Beyond the Festivals: While ACL and SXSW get the headlines, the music scene is hopping every single night of the week.
Foodie Heaven: The food scene has exploded way beyond brisket (though the brisket is life-changing). There is an impressive lineup of innovative restaurants popping up all over the city.
Cowboy/Girl Souvenir: If you’re in the market for authentic boots, head straight to Allens Boots on South Congress. It’s an Austin institution!
Rails Across America
I am a massive fan of rail travel. While the U.S. might not have those ultra-sleek, high-speed lines you find in Europe or Japan, we have something arguably better: iconic, sweeping scenery. The best part? No one has to keep their eyes on the road. The whole family can just sit back, snack, and watch the world go by.
The Rocky Mountaineer: Rockies to the Red Rocks:
If you want a curated, high-end experience, this two-day journey from Denver to Moab is a dream. You’ll wind past the Colorado River and cross the Continental Divide, with an overnight hotel stay in Glenwood Springs. It is a stunning way to see the American West without the stress of a rental car.
Amtrak’s Iconic Routes:
Amtrak offers several legendary routes that turn the journey itself into the vacation. You can opt for a standard seat or book a "Roomette"—a cozy little compartment where the seats transform into beds for the night.
The California Zephyr: Often called the most beautiful train ride in North America, running from Chicago to San Francisco.
The Coast Starlight: Hugging the shoreline from LA to Seattle.
The Empire Builder: Running from Chicago to Seattle, including a spectacular stretch through Glacier National Park.
A Quick Hop North: The Canadian Rockies:
If you have your passport handy and want to venture just across the border, the Canadian Rockies offer some of the most luxury-focused rail travel in the world. With routes connecting Vancouver, Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper, these trains feature incredible glass-domed cars. They also schedule all overnights in hotels, so you never have to worry about missing a single mountain peak while you sleep!
The Bottom Line: Your Respite is Waiting
Whether you’re tucked into a local café in your hometown, hiking the "Mighty Five" in Utah, or watching the Continental Divide roll past your train window, the goal remains the same: reclaiming your peace of mind. The world is always going to have its "madness," but as we’ve seen, from the 1940s to today, travel is the ultimate antidote. It’s the way we reconnect with ourselves and the people we love most. You don't need a complicated international itinerary or a stress-inducing flight to find a little magic. Sometimes, you just need a car key, a train ticket, or a really good pair of walking shoes.
So, which one sparked a little joy for you? Whether you're ready to book that "Easy-Peasy" resort or want to map out a custom National Park road trip, I’m here to handle the logistics so you can handle the relaxing. Let's turn that "holding your breath" into a long, happy exhale.
Where should we head first? Reach out and let's get you on the road!
